History
Optimal Fund Management Pty Limited is an independent investment manager that focuses on providing the best possible return to investors. The company was established in 1999 by Warwick Johnson who wanted to use his expertise and experience to provide investors with a niche opportunity to invest in the Japanese stockmarket and capitalise on what he correctly identified as a major turnaround.
Initially, Optimal focused exclusively on the Japanese market to ensure its expertise
was not diluted. The results have vindicated this strategy,
with returns in excess of 14.5% per annum over the eight years
since the launch of the first Optimal fund in October 1999.
The Optimal team has over seventy years combined experience in Japanese and Australasian equities. The founder and Managing Director, Warwick Johnson, leads the team from Sydney. Members of the investment team are located in both Sydney and Tokyo enabling them to maximise the benefits of real time investment opportunities in the Japanese and Asia Pacific markets. Details of the team's academic and professional expertise are included in our team profile.
Optimal takes an absolute return approach to investing using a variety of techniques including hedging the portfolios from downturns and selling short stocks which it has identified as being over-priced and having poor prospects. Success is measured as improved returns on previous performance, irrespective of market indices or other measures, and by preserving gains when market conditions worsen. Optimal uses the same philosophy whether investing in the Japanese or Asia Pacific markets.
Optimal provides clients with direct personal access to the investment managers responsible for their portfolios that larger organisations cannot match.
To summarise, Optimal's strength lies in its:
Investment approach
Specialisation
Expertise
Client relationships
